A Velvet Awakening
With each warming day the hills and valleys beckon with velvet greenery, wildflowers bloom in riots of color and the calls and melodies of playful wildlife echo in the hills. All of which makes it the perfect season for nature tours – especially Birding as it is peak migratory, nesting and breeding season. Many of Vermont’s historic and romantic Bed & Breakfasts take great care to nurture their surroundings into a bird-friendly environment and often offer guided hikes to the best spots for Bird Watching and other Ecotours. After the sun and warming breezes have awakened the fullness of the Green Mountains its time to set out high and low for mountain adventures.
And adventures abound. Try your hand at fly-fishing the clear streams, canoe a crystal lake or kayak the surging white-water (or slower waters), sample the state’s renowned maple syrup while expert syrup-makers boil the sap among the fragrant wood smoke and demonstrate the production process, and maybe take in one – or a few – of Vermont’s spring festivals. Road or trail biking is another wonderful way to take in the springtime – from Bennington to Lake Champlain you’ll find scores of scenic and well maintained cycling routes and trails for hours of enjoyment, so start cycling!
Vermonters are creative and industrious as you’ll quickly discover when shopping the town centers and wayside county stores and craft shops. Our artisans and craftspeople take much pride in making things the old fashioned way – from woodworking and quilting to glassblowing and pottery. Shopping in Vermont is a treasure hunt and its time to shop. In spring, as in most seasons, you’ll also discover the richness of Vermont’s early Revolutionary and Industrial History at the many museums and historic sites – some are still water-wheel powered. Or simply stroll and shop the main streets of Vermont’s towns and villages all while meeting the friendly people who make this such a magical place. Spring in the Green Mountains is a time for making new friends and lasting new memories.
